Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Malic acid, found naturally in fruit and above all in apples; commercially it is generally produced synthetically.
- Where it is used
- Used as a souring agent and acidity regulator in confectionery, fruit drinks and desserts.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
