How Is a Kosher Certificate Obtained and How Do Rabbinical Inspections Work?
Kosher certification consists of application, ingredient and facility review, rabbinical (mashgiach) supervision and a contract.
The process begins with the manufacturer applying to an authorized kosher body. The body requests a list of all raw materials, additives and suppliers; the source of every component is evaluated for kosher status.
Next, a rabbi or trained supervisor (mashgiach) inspects the production facility on site. Equipment cleanliness, meat-dairy separation, the production flow and potential cross-contamination risks are checked; if needed, special cleaning (kashering) is applied to equipment.
Once the requirements are met, a certification contract is signed and the product earns the right to use the hechsher (kosher logo). The certificate is ongoing; the body verifies continued compliance through periodic and sometimes unannounced audits.
