How Is the Kosher Logo (Hechsher) Used on Products?

The hechsher is the official kosher mark on packaging that shows a product's kosher status and any meat/dairy/pareve distinction.

The hechsher is the official approval mark a kosher body gives to a product, usually placed on the front of the package near the product name. The symbol shows which body certified it (for example, a U inside a circle means OU).

Small letters next to the logo often indicate status: 'D' for dairy, 'M' for meat and 'Pareve' for neutral products. This labeling lets the consumer quickly understand which meal a product can be used with.

The logo may be used only on products within the contract and in the form approved by the body. Unauthorized or misleading use is both a breach of contract and damaging to consumer trust; therefore the logo's size and placement are set together with the certifying body.
