Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A natural yellow-orange colour obtained from the rhizome of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa). It is concentrated by separating it from the spice itself with solvents; a synthetic form can also be produced, but the plant extract is the one commonly used in food.
- Where it is used
- Used to give yellow colour to margarine, butter, cheese, mustard, pickles, instant soup, baked goods, ice cream and beverages. It is also found in cosmetics and supplements.
- Health note
- It is generally considered safe; turmeric has a long history as a traditional food. Gastrointestinal complaints may be reported at very high doses. An acceptable daily intake limit has been set.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is plant-based; as long as the solvent or oil used as a carrier is also plant or mineral in origin, it generally poses no halal problem. Even so, since an animal gelatine coating can rarely be used in the carrier, it is wise to check the manufacturer's declaration for sensitive products.
