What it is & how it is made: A synthetic (azo) orange-yellow colour; it is chemically produced and carries no animal source.
Where it is used: Used for orange-yellow colour in confectionery, carbonated drinks, instant soup, desserts and snacks.
Health note: It has been linked to hyperactivity and allergic reactions in children; in the EU a label warning is mandatory. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
Halal assessment: It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; no halal obstacle is seen. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
