Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A natural red colour obtained by drying and crushing the females of the cochineal insect (Dactylopius coccus). Carminic acid is the main colouring substance. Its source is therefore animal (an insect).
- Where it is used
- Used for red-pink tones in yoghurt, fruit dairy products, jam, confectionery, meat products, beverages and lipstick.
- Health note
- Allergic reactions and, rarely, anaphylaxis have been reported in some people; apart from that it is in widespread use.
- Halal assessment
- Because its source is an insect it is animal-derived, and scholars differ over the eating and use of insects; for this reason it has been counted as doubtful. As the definitive ruling may vary by school of law and by fatwa, the consumer should decide according to the opinion they follow and the manufacturer's halal certificate.
