- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic (azo) red-burgundy colour; it is chemically produced and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used for red-burgundy colour in beverages, confectionery and some foods (restricted in many countries).
- Health note
- It has been banned in some countries (e.g. the United States); a suspicion of carcinogenicity has been debated. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; no halal obstacle is seen. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
