What it is & how it is made: A synthetic (azo) red colour; it is chemically produced and carries no animal source.
Where it is used: Used for red colour in confectionery, desserts, beverages and some processed foods.
Health note: It has been linked to hyperactivity and allergy in children; it is restricted in some countries; in the EU a label warning is mandatory. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
Halal assessment: It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; there is no halal obstacle. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
