- A synthetic (azo) red colour; it is chemically produced and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Widely used for red colour in confectionery, carbonated drinks, desserts, crisps and snacks.
- Health note
- It has been linked to hyperactivity and allergy in children; in the EU a label warning is mandatory; it is restricted in some countries. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; there is no halal obstacle. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
