- What it is & how it is made
- A preservative from the sorbic acid family (sorbic acid); it is chemically produced industrially and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used as a preservative against mould and yeast in cheese, yoghurt, baked goods, wine, sauces and dried fruit.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at ordinary levels; skin irritation is rarely reported.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
