Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A preservative that is an ester of para-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) (sodium methyl paraben); it is synthetic and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used as a preservative against mould and bacteria in some foods, beverages, medicines and cosmetics.
- Health note
- It has been debated with regard to allergic reactions and hormonal (endocrine) effects; some parabens are restricted in food. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
