- What it is & how it is made
- A sulphur-based preservative and antioxidant (sodium sulphite); it is mineral or chemical in origin, not animal.
- Where it is used
- Used in dried fruit, wine, fruit juice, potato products and some processed foods to preserve colour and prevent mould and yeast.
- Health note
- It can provoke a reaction in people with asthma or sulphite sensitivity (an allergen); it must be declared on the label. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is mineral/chemical in origin and contains nothing animal; no halal obstacle is seen. It has been left as doubtful because of sulphite sensitivity and the health warning, and because of the 'tayyib' principle.
