Detailed information

What it is & how it is made
A sulphur-based preservative and antioxidant (sodium sulphite); it is mineral or chemical in origin, not animal.
Where it is used
Used in dried fruit, wine, fruit juice, potato products and some processed foods to preserve colour and prevent mould and yeast.
Health note
It can provoke a reaction in people with asthma or sulphite sensitivity (an allergen); it must be declared on the label. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
Halal assessment
It is mineral/chemical in origin and contains nothing animal; no halal obstacle is seen. It has been left as doubtful because of sulphite sensitivity and the health warning, and because of the 'tayyib' principle.
