Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Biphenyl (diphenyl); a surface preservative used to prevent mould on the peel of fruit and citrus. It is synthetic and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Applied to the peel of citrus and some other fruits to prevent mould during transport.
- Health note
- It is restricted in some countries; as it remains on the peel, washing is advised. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
