Detailed information

What it is & how it is made: A preservative from the propionic acid family (propionic acid); it also occurs in nature but commercially it is generally produced synthetically.
Where it is used: Used in bread and baked goods to prevent mould and rope spoilage (bacillus).
Health note: It is considered safe at ordinary levels; sensitivity is reported in some people.
Halal assessment: It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
