What it is & how it is made: An antioxidant from the vitamin C family (calcium ascorbate); commercially it is generally produced by fermentation or synthesis and carries no animal source.
Where it is used: Used in processed meat, fruit juice, canned goods and baked goods to preserve colour and prevent rancidity (oxidation).
Health note: It is a vitamin and is considered safe, even beneficial, at ordinary doses.
Halal assessment: It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
