What it is & how it is made
An antioxidant from the vitamin C family (calcium ascorbate); commercially it is generally produced by fermentation or synthesis and carries no animal source.
Where it is used
Used in processed meat, fruit juice, canned goods and baked goods to preserve colour and prevent rancidity (oxidation).
Health note
It is a vitamin and is considered safe, even beneficial, at ordinary doses.
Halal assessment
It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
