- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic antioxidant (propyl gallate, an ester of gallic acid); it carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used in oils, margarine, crisps, chewing gum and stock cubes to prevent rancidity.
- Health note
- Allergy or sensitivity is reported in some people; its use is limited by regulation. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
