What it is & how it is made: A synthetic antioxidant that is an isomer of ascorbic acid (erythorbic acid); it carries no animal source.
Where it is used: Used for colour preservation and as an antioxidant in processed meat and fish.
Health note: It is considered safe at ordinary levels.
Halal assessment: It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
