What it is & how it is made
A synthetic antioxidant (BHT, butylated hydroxytoluene); it carries no animal source.
Where it is used
Used to prevent rancidity in fats, breakfast cereals, chewing gum and packaged foods.
Health note
It has been debated with regard to health at high doses. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
Halal assessment
It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
