- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic antioxidant (BHT, butylated hydroxytoluene); it carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used to prevent rancidity in fats, breakfast cereals, chewing gum and packaged foods.
- Health note
- It has been debated with regard to health at high doses. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
