What it is & how it is made
An emulsifier found naturally in oilseeds and eggs (it binds fat and water together). In the food industry the great majority is obtained from soy or sunflower (plant-based).
Where it is used
Used in chocolate, margarine, baked goods, infant formula and ice cream to keep the mixture from separating.
Health note
It is considered safe; it is a natural food component.
Halal assessment
The bulk of commercial lecithin is produced from soy (plant-based) and is halal in that respect. Egg lecithin may rarely be used; that too is halal. Consulting the manufacturer is advised only where the source is not clearly stated.
