- What it is & how it is made
- Sodium tartrates; they are generally obtained from grapes as a by-product of wine production. Tartaric acid and its salts are used as acidity regulators.
- Where it is used
- Used in baking powder, baked goods, confectionery and beverages for acidity and body.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is a by-product of grape and wine production; it is not alcohol itself, but its origin in the wine industry is regarded as sensitive by some scholarly opinions.
