- What it is & how it is made
- A mineral phosphate salt (magnesium phosphates); used as an acidity regulator, an emulsifier and a raising agent. Its source is mineral.
- Where it is used
- Used in processed cheese, meat products, baked goods and carbonated drinks.
- Health note
- High phosphate intake has been debated with regard to kidney and heart health; ordinary levels are regulated. Caution is advised from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is mineral and contains nothing animal; however, because of the doubtful-by-default principle and the health debate it has been left as doubtful.
