Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A substance of the sugar alcohol (polyol) class. Industrially it is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of glucose obtained from starch (maize, wheat); it also occurs naturally in some fruits.
- Where it is used
- Used as a sweetener, humectant and bulking agent in sugar free confectionery and chewing gum; it is also found in baked goods and toothpaste.
- Health note
- In foods where the total polyol content exceeds 10 percent by weight, regulations require the label to state that excessive consumption may produce a laxative effect. This is a labelling obligation, not a statement of harm.
- Halal assessment
- The raw material is starch derived glucose and production is a catalytic chemical process; no animal input is expected. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
