Magnezyum silikatlar
E-number category
Acidity regulator, raising agent, anti-caking agent
Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- An additive group comprising magnesium silicate and magnesium trisilicate, produced synthetically by precipitation from silicate solutions and magnesium salts.
- Where it is used
- Used as an anti caking agent and flow enhancer. Under the EU and Turkish Food Codex lists it is permitted in 28 food categories, chiefly dried powdered foods and tablets, cheese products, salt and seasonings, and food supplements.
- Health note
- In its 2018 re-evaluation EFSA found the toxicological data for the individual silicates insufficient, could not derive an acceptable daily intake (ADI) and considered the former group ADI of 'not specified' obsolete. The Panel concluded that the safety of these additives when used as food additives cannot be assessed. Findings of silicon accumulation in rat kidney and liver at high doses were noted.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is mineral and synthetic, and no animal input is reported in its production. The carrier or processing aid in the finished product may differ, so consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
