What Are the Main Differences Between Halal and Kosher?
Halal and kosher share many principles but differ on meat-dairy separation, slaughter method and alcohol.
Halal and kosher share many common points; in both, pork is forbidden and animals must be slaughtered in a specific way. However, a product being kosher does not automatically make it halal, or vice versa.
The most striking difference is meat-dairy separation: kashrut strictly forbids meat and dairy together, while halal has no such rule. Slaughter conditions also differ between the two.
Approaches to alcohol diverge as well: alcohol is generally forbidden in halal, whereas it can be acceptable under certain conditions in kosher. Producers targeting both markets often obtain two separate certificates.
