⚠️ Only the yellow aril of fruit that has opened by itself on the tree is edible; unripe fruit, the pink membrane and the black seeds contain hypoglycin and are poisonous, causing severe illness. Native to West Africa, the tree reached the Caribbean along the slave-trade routes and became emblematic of Jamaican cooking.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
