Did you know?

It is the tender core of the banana plant's pseudostem; once the tough outer sheaths are stripped away, a pale, crisp cylinder remains. Sliced, it trails fibres around the finger and browns quickly, so it is held in buttermilk or lemon water. In South India it goes into salads and soups.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
