Did you know?

The edible part is not the fruit itself but the fleshy sepals, which are hard and very sour. Assamese and Bengali cooking uses it as a souring agent in pickles, chutneys and fish stews. The name refers to elephants feeding on it in the wild.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
