Did you know?

One of the first plants to colonise ground opened by fire, which is where its name comes from. Its young spring shoots and leaves are cooked like asparagus, and in Alaska it is a traditional spring vegetable. It turns bitter with age, so only young growth is gathered.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
