Did you know?
It was domesticated in the highlands of Mexico and Guatemala. Its seeds are among the largest of any bean, mottled purple and black, and its scarlet flowers are also grown as ornamentals. Like other beans, the dry seed is never eaten raw.
Consumption tip
Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
