The pea-sized fruits of a shrub that is the wild relative of the pistachio; in southeastern Anatolia they are roasted and ground into menengiç coffee. Ripe fruits turn purple, while unripe ones go into pickles and syrup. The tree itself is grafted and used as rootstock for pistachio orchards.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
