Did you know?

The swollen, fleshy stem base of an aquatic relative of wild rice, enlarged by a fungus that infects it. It is white, crisp and faintly sweet, and appears in Chinese and Taiwanese stir-fries. Once the plant is affected in this way it no longer sets seed.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
