Did you know?

A prickly pear species whose fruit stays sour; rather than being eaten as fruit it is used as a souring agent in place of lime. In Mexican cooking it goes into the stew called mole de olla and into sauces, and it has a thick rind with a thin layer of flesh. It hangs on the plant for months, so it is available through winter.

Consumption tip

Even natural produce may carry pesticide residues. Wash fruits and vegetables under plenty of running water and discard the outer leaves of leafy greens. A short soak in vinegar water can also help reduce residues. Where possible, prefer certified organic or good-agricultural-practice products.
