Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Vitamin B2, which gives a yellow colour. As a food additive it is generally produced by microbial fermentation or synthetically.
- Where it is used
- Used for yellow colour and fortification in breakfast cereals, dairy products, instant drinks and vitamin supplements.
- Health note
- It is a vitamin and is considered safe, even beneficial, at ordinary doses.
- Halal assessment
- Its production is usually based on fermentation on a plant medium or on synthesis, and it mostly contains nothing animal. However, because in some production processes the source of the medium or carrier cannot be verified, it has been left as doubtful under the principle of 'doubtful until the source is confirmed'. Its plant-based or fermentation-derived and certified form can be accepted as halal.
