Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic (azo group) yellow colour; it is produced from petrochemical raw material. Its source is not animal.
- Where it is used
- Used for yellow colour in confectionery, carbonated drinks, instant desserts, crisps and some medicines.
- Health note
- It has been linked to hyperactivity and allergic reactions in some children; in the EU a label warning is mandatory for azo colours of this kind. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (clean/wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the health debate and the 'halal and tayyib' principle, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
