Detailed information

What it is & how it is made
A synthetic (azo) red colour; it is chemically produced and carries no animal source. (Note: it must not be confused with carmine/E120; that one is insect-derived, this one is synthetic.)
Where it is used
Used for red colour in confectionery, beverages, jam, desserts and some medicines.
Health note
It has been linked to hyperactivity and allergy in children; in the EU a label warning is mandatory. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
Halal assessment
It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; there is no halal obstacle. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
