- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic red-pink colour (an iodine-containing compound); it is chemically produced and carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used for pink-red colour in cocktail cherries, confectionery and some desserts and medicines.
- Health note
- Its effects on the thyroid at high doses (because of its iodine content) have been debated; it is restricted in some countries. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the tayyib principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic in origin and contains nothing animal; no halal obstacle is seen. It has been left as doubtful because of the health debate and the tayyib principle.
