Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A brown colour obtained by the controlled heating of sugar (sucrose), that is, by caramelisation. This is the 'plain' type, produced without any ammonia or sulphite additive. Its source is plant-based (sugar).
- Where it is used
- Widely used for brown colour in cola-type drinks, bread, biscuits, sauces, vinegar, liqueurs and confectionery.
- Health note
- Plain caramel (E150a) is the simplest of the four caramel types and is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- Because its source is sugar (plant-based) and the plain type contains no animal or alcohol additive, it is widely accepted as halal and has been classified as halal. (Note: some production processes may differ; no problem is expected in certified products.)
