Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Carbon (charcoal) powder used as a black colour. It can be obtained from plant charcoal (wood or coconut) OR, historically, from animal bone (bone char); this varies by source.
- Where it is used
- Used for black colour in confectionery, cheese rind, liqueurs and some baked goods.
- Health note
- Food-grade carbon is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- The source is decisive: if it comes from plant charcoal it is halal; if it comes from animal bone (bone char) and the animal was not slaughtered according to Islamic rules, it is problematic. Because the source is mostly not stated, it has been left as doubtful; its plant-based or certified form can be accepted as halal.
