Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic preservative that is the sodium salt of benzoic acid. It is chemically produced industrially; its source is not animal.
- Where it is used
- Used as a preservative against mould and yeast in acidic foods such as carbonated and fruit drinks, pickles, sauces and jam.
- Health note
- When it is present in the same product as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a small amount of benzene (a carcinogenic substance) can form under the effect of heat or light. Some studies have also linked it to hyperactivity in children. For this reason it is assessed with caution on health grounds under the 'halal and tayyib' principle.
- Halal assessment
- By its chemical source it contains nothing animal; in that respect there is no halal obstacle. However, because this site adopts the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and there is a health debate, it has been treated as doubtful; the decision is left to the consumer.
