Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A preservative with limited use (hexamethylenetetramine); when it breaks down it releases formaldehyde. It is synthetic.
- Where it is used
- In some countries it is used in a limited way only in certain cheeses (e.g. Provolone).
- Health note
- It is disputed with regard to health because it releases formaldehyde; its use is very limited. It calls for caution from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical in origin and contains no animal matter; in that respect no halal obstacle is seen. However, because of the 'halal and tayyib (clean/wholesome)' principle and the health debate, it has been left as doubtful; the decision rests with the consumer.
