Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- The fat-soluble ester of vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate); it is made from ascorbic acid and palmitic acid. Palmitic acid may come from vegetable OR animal fat.
- Where it is used
- Used as an antioxidant in vegetable oil, infant formula, crisps and baked goods.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at food-use levels.
- Halal assessment
- What matters is the source of the fatty acid: if it comes from vegetable oil it is halal; if it comes from animal fat, especially pork or an animal not slaughtered according to Islamic rules, it is problematic. Because the source is mostly not stated, it has been left as doubtful.
