What it is & how it is made: A mineral acid (phosphoric acid); it is used as an acidity regulator. It carries no animal source.
Where it is used: Used for tartness and acidity in cola-type drinks and some processed foods.
Health note: High intake has been debated with regard to bone and dental health. Caution is advised from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
Halal assessment: It is mineral in origin and contains nothing animal; it has been left as doubtful under the doubtful-by-default principle and because of the health debate.
