- What it is & how it is made
- A synthetic metal-binding agent (calcium disodium EDTA); it prevents oxidation by binding metals. It carries no animal source.
- Where it is used
- Used to preserve colour and flavour in canned goods, sauces, salad dressings and some beverages.
- Health note
- Ordinary levels are regulated; high intake has been debated. Caution is advised from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
- Halal assessment
- It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
