What it is & how it is made
A synthetic metal-binding agent (calcium disodium EDTA); it prevents oxidation by binding metals. It carries no animal source.
Where it is used
Used to preserve colour and flavour in canned goods, sauces, salad dressings and some beverages.
Health note
Ordinary levels are regulated; high intake has been debated. Caution is advised from the standpoint of the 'tayyib' (wholesome) principle.
Halal assessment
It is synthetic/chemical (or plant/fermentation) in origin and typically contains no animal matter; however, under the 'doubtful by default' and 'halal and tayyib' principles it has been left as doubtful until its source and process are confirmed.
