Oksistearin
E-number category
Antioxidant / acidity regulator
Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A substance derived from stearic acid, a fatty acid (oxystearin); an anti-foaming and anti-crystallisation agent. The fatty acid may be plant OR animal in origin.
- Where it is used
- Used to prevent cloudiness and crystallisation in vegetable oils.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- What matters is the source of the fatty acid: if it comes from vegetable oil it is halal; if it comes from animal fat, especially pork or an animal not slaughtered according to Islamic rules, it is problematic. Because the source is mostly not stated, it has been left as doubtful.
