Propan-1,2-diol aljinat
E-number category
Thickener, emulsifier, stabiliser
Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Also known as propylene glycol alginate. It is a semi synthetic derivative produced by esterifying seaweed derived alginic acid with propylene oxide. It is more stable in acidic conditions than the other alginates.
- Where it is used
- Used as a stabiliser and emulsifier in acidic drinks, salad dressings, fruit flavoured milk drinks and to maintain beer foam stability.
- Health note
- JECFA has established an acceptable daily intake of 70 mg per kg body weight for this substance; unlike the other alginates it carries a numerical limit.
- Halal assessment
- The alginate part comes from seaweed and the ester part from petrochemical propylene oxide; it contains no animal input. It is unrelated to ethanol, the intoxicating alcohol; propylene glycol is a different substance. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
