Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A substance of the sugar alcohol (polyol) class. Industrially it is produced by hydrogenation of fructose or glucose syrups or by microbial fermentation; it occurs naturally in some plants and seaweeds.
- Where it is used
- Used as a sweetener and bulking agent in sugar free confectionery and as an anti sticking dusting powder on chewing gum; it also appears as an anti caking agent.
- Health note
- In foods where the total polyol content exceeds 10 percent by weight, regulations require the label to state that excessive consumption may produce a laxative effect. This is a labelling obligation, not a statement of harm.
- Halal assessment
- The raw material is a plant sugar or a microbial fermentation product; no animal input is expected. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
