- What it is & how it is made
- A natural polysaccharide that is the main structural component of plant cell walls. As a food additive it is purified from plant sources such as wood pulp or cotton linters, and is used in two forms: microcrystalline cellulose and powdered cellulose.
- Where it is used
- Used as an anti caking agent in grated cheese, as a bulking and thickening agent in prepared desserts and sauces, and as a filler in reduced calorie products.
- Health note
- Evaluations concluded that a numerical acceptable daily intake was not required. It is an indigestible fibre and is not absorbed by the body.
- Halal assessment
- The source is entirely plant based and no animal input is used in its production. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
