Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- An emulsifier obtained by esterifying polyglycerols with food fats and oils or with fatty acids occurring in foods. Polyglycerol is produced by condensation of glycerol.
- Where it is used
- Used as an emulsifier. Permitted under Annex II of EU Regulation 1333/2008 and under the Turkish Food Codex Food Additives Regulation.
- Health note
- In its 2017 re-evaluation EFSA concluded that there was no need for a numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI) for E 475. In the 2022 follow-up opinion (EFSA Journal 2022;20(5):7308) the Panel maintained the conclusion that there is no safety concern at the reported uses and use levels, and supported strengthening the specifications for the control of impurities.
- Halal assessment
- Both the glycerol that is the source of the polyglycerol and the fatty acids in the ester part can be derived from vegetable or animal fats, and the EFSA opinion does not distinguish the source. Unless the source is documented it should be treated as source dependent; consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
