Detailed information

What it is & how it is made
A mineral salt of potassium and chloride ions. As a food additive it is extracted from natural potassium salt deposits such as sylvinite, carnallite and kainite.
Where it is used
Used as a seasoning agent, gelling agent and yeast food, and also in salt substitutes that replace table salt in order to reduce sodium. It is permitted at quantum satis in many food categories.
Health note
In its 2019 assessment EFSA identified no safety concern for the chlorides at the reported use levels, using a reference value of 40 mg chloride per kg body weight per day. Mean intakes are below this value, while high percentile intakes in younger age groups slightly exceeded it.
Halal assessment
It is sourced from natural mineral deposits and no animal input is reported in its production. The carrier or processing aid in the finished product may differ, so consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
