What it is & how it is made
The potassium salts of sulphuric acid (potassium sulphate and potassium hydrogen sulphate). They are obtained synthetically or from naturally occurring double salt minerals.
Where it is used
Used as an acidity regulator and salt substitute; the sulphate group is permitted at quantum satis in many categories within Group I under the EU and Turkish Food Codex lists.
Health note
In 2019 EFSA concluded that a numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI) was not required for the sulphates and identified no safety concern at the reported uses. A laxative effect at high doses is the main effect noted.
Halal assessment
Its source is mineral and synthetic, and no animal input is reported in its production. The carrier or processing aid in the finished product may differ, so consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
